Faster Selection on the AutoCAD 2011 Platform

In this Tips and Tricks I want to talk about the new object creation, selection and display options on the AutoCAD 2011 platform that will save you time, picks and clicks.  The first is the ability to create new objects based on existing content that you already have in the drawing.  Now some of you might say just use the copy command; but once you see how this tool works, you’ll see that this might be a better solution.  A lot of times we need to draw lines, arcs, and circles with the same layer, color and linetype, and this is a very simple tool to start using.  Select an existing line in your drawing and right-click.  On the menu is a command called “add selected.” Select it, and now notice that you are drawing a line with the same properties as the other.  Hopefully no more drawing lines on the wrong layer.

The next command is a tool to help you select multiple items of the same kind.  This is great tool if you need to switch all of the objects to a different layer, or maybe it is text and you need to change the height.  To use the command, select an object that you want to change and right click.  On the menu select “Select Similar.”  Notice how everything else in the drawing using the same properties is now automatically selected.  Now, using the properties command, you can change the properties and everything is updated.

The next command changes the visibility of objects.  A lot of you have used the “isolate layer” command, but this takes it a step further.  Select a series of objects, and make sure they are on different layers to really see how this command can work for you.  Once you select the objects, right click.  On the menu select the sub-menu called “Isolate,” then select “Isolate Objects.”  Notice how everything else turns off except for those objects that you selected.  So the big thing with this command is that layers don’t matter.  To see the whole drawing again, select the “red light bulb” at the bottom right corner under the command line.  You can also reverse this idea and use “Hide Objects” so everything that was selected gets turned off.

This is a small example of what is new with the AutoCAD 2011 platform.  It should help in doing fewer picks and clicks in AutoCAD.  See you in class, Jarod Schultz

Partner Products

If you have ever wondered just how many different applications are available for Autodesk products then this is your site. This list is generated though the Autodesk Developer Network and is updated on a regular basis. It includes applications for most of Autodesk's product line. Partner Products Link
Another great site is the the Autodesk Labs Utilities Plugin of the Month site. All of the plugins they provide come with full source code to show you what goes on inside and what can be done in a relatively small amount of time to develop (from half a day up to about a week). Link Here

CAD on the web: Project Butterfly Now Available

Today Autodesk Labs announced worldwide availability of Project Butterfly. Project Butterfly allows you to edit, co-edit, and review designs using your browser. Although you can save your design as a local drawing file, as long as you have it via the cloud, you can leave it in the cloud. This opens the door to collaboration with others in distant locations without the need to transmit files around the globe. Project Butterfly Home Page on Autodesk Labs

NOW THAT AU 2009 IS BEHIND US

The 17th Annual Autodesk University was held on Tuesday, December 1st through 3rd, 2009, at the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Our tech support team attended the conference that week and came away with powerful information.  There were hundreds of classes to choose from, all with great content.  We were excited that four of our techs were selected to present a class at AU2009.  With over 5,000 participants, each day was chock full of classes and activities, including entrance into the Shark Reef and Aquarium at Mandalay Bay.  Autodesk University is one of the best investments you can make by sending at least one member of your team.  The knowledge and networking is invaluable.  You can become a member at http://au.autodesk.com .  Hope to “CU” at AU 2009!

2010 License Transfer Utility

New to 2010 versions, the online License Transfer Utility (LTU) replaces the Portable License Utility (PLU) that was included with many legacy Autodesk products.  Similar to the PLU, the LTU enables the transfer of the standalone license activation to another system.  This transfer is done by exporting the license to an Autodesk server and then retrieving that exported license on the destination computer.

There is no computer identification that needs to take place between the two workstations, and there is no restriction on how many times this feature can be used.  Additionally, there is no time restriction for the transferred license.  The exported license can be imported by you to your laptop (reserved for you) or can be made available for use by someone else (“public” use) to import to their home computer, laptop, etc.  The LTU is not user-specific; it is tied to the serial number of the product.  Products with different serial numbers cannot share the exported license.

The LTU is located by selecting Start button>Autodesk>(the application you need the license exported from)>License Transfer Utility.  The CAD-1 tech support team would be happy to assist you if you need help with this utility.
